Aluminum Backed Discs
On these smaller discs (8" & 12"), the diamonds are bonded to a thin, steel disc which is laminated to an aluminum backing plate. These plates are ground flat and parallel to exacting standards.
Two mounting schemes are available, a 1/2" center hole for mounting on a threaded shaft or a screwback-style. This allows a completely flat, uninterrupted grinding surface. To achieve this, there is a 1/4"-20" threaded bolt extending from the back of the disc so that it can be screwed into a shaft. Any hole size and any grit size can be ordered. These discs cannot be replated.
Solid Steel Discs
Glastar discs are manufactured to extremely tight tolerances, and they are concentric to less than .025% of the diameter. Then, each disc is individually balanced to eliminate vibration.
All steel discs feature a very large radius so that inside (or concave) curves can be ground on the periphery of the disc. The standard mounting hole is l" Any other size (5/8", 3/4", 1 3/16", 1 1/4", etc.) can be ordered. These discs can be returned to be replated. This saves the cost of the steel blank.
Diamond Pattern
For 60 through 180 grit rigid discs, a dot pattern is standard. This is a very aggressive pattern and has been developed especially for grinding glass. The 360 and 600 grit are smooth. For very hard materials, a smooth pattern may be more suitable on the coarser grits. Any pattern is available on any grit. The 100% diamonds are encapsulated using a hard- nickel bonding system. This system produces a product which will outlast any plated disc on the market.
On A Glastar B1
When used on a B1, these "special" discs are completely flat. This allows use of the total grinding surface without being concerned about the work piece striking a mounting nut. The disc can be turned upside down rapidly. This permits the use of the other side for the new adhesive-backed grinding or polishing pads.
On Other Machines
These discs can be used directly on Maja and S.W. For older style equipment such as: Somaca, Lang, CRL, Denver, Paoli, Covington and Sims, the speed should be increased to take advantage of the diamonds. If the equipment is too old, this may not be possible.
On some manufacturers' machines, it may be possible to achieve the speed; but the vibration will not be tolerable. Glastar is happy to provide advice regarding these machines.
