DIAMOND
DISC GRINDER
THIS IS
THE FIRST GRINDER DESIGNED SPECIFICALLY FOR STRAIGHT EDGES
All glass grinders
on the market (such as the G8) do a great job on curves, but they
are not very easy to use on straight edges. This is the perfect tool
for straight edges and because it is a diamond disc, it is far more
cost effective than a belt sander.
IMPORTANT
SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS
READ ALL INSTRUCTIONS
FOR PERSONAL SAFETY THIS MACHINE MUST BE PROPERLY GROUNDED
The power cord of this
machine is equipped with a three-prong (grounding) plug which mates
with a standard three-prong (grounding) wall receptacle to minimize
the possibility of electric shock hazard. Where a standard two-prong
wall receptable is encountered, it is the personal responsibility
and obligation of the customer to have it replaced with a properly
grounded three-prong wall receptacle. DO NOT, UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES,
CUT OR REMOVE THE THIRD (GROUNDING) PRONG FROM THE POWER CORD.
Always unplug your machine before cleaning or making any
repairs - (Note: we strongly recommend that you return the unit to
the factory for repair) USE ONLY IDENTICAL REPLACEMENT PARTS TO REPAIR
THIS MACHINE.

Eye Protection
When operating the
grinder, always protect yourself against eye injuries from flying
glass. Either wear goggles or place a piece of glass in the eye
shield slot. Use double strength glass which is a maximum of 8
1/2 inches (21.59 cm) wide.
The length of the glass depends on your height above the
machine when you are grinding. We suggest a piece 7 inches (17.78 cm)
tall or more.
THE WATER
SYSTEM
Place the plastic cup
beside the grinder so that the drain hose on the right side of the
grinder is directly over the cup. Put a cup of water in the water
supply basin. Lift the slide valve very slightly to allow a steady
drip on the disc...If a white paste forms on the edge of the glass
where you are grinding, there is insufficient water. Raise the valve
a little higher. When the supply basin is dry, return the water that
has collected in the plastic cup to the basin. After you have used
the water serveral times, it should be discarded and replaced with
fresh water. Rinse out the basin and the grinder water well every
4 hours so that the drain does not plug.
When you have finished grinding, push the slide valve all
the way down. If the valve leaks, even if it has been pressed all the
way down, or it is difficult to move up and down, remove it and apply
a little Vaseline to the rubber surface. That should cure both problems.
STRAIGHT
EDGE GRINDING
Place the piece of
glass against the vertical work surface, and use it as a guide
to keep your work piece perpendicular to the grinding disc. As
you grind, move the glass from side to side over the disc. This
applies whether the piece you are grinding is wider than the 6" (15.24
cm) disc or very narrow.
Be sure to keep the glass moving from side to side constantly.
If you hold the glass stationary and some of the glass extends beyond
the disc, you will grind a step in the glass at the edge of the disc.
In the corner of the step, there will be very large chips.
Vary the speed as you move the glass until you find a rhythm
that works best for you.
BEVELING
If you have a very
thick piece of glass such as a drapery or 1/4" (6.350 mm) plate
that you intend to fit into lead, the edges can be beveled very
easily using this machine.
Note that the splash guard is sloped down to the disc.
This is a 15 degree angle. Rest the piece of glass on the splash guard,
then gradually slide it toward the disc. When you touch start to move
the glass from side to side, you will probably want to put the same
width bevel on both sides of the glass.
CHIPPING
The size of the chipping
created by the 180 grit disc (this is the standard grit on the
G9) is about the same as that created by a 100 grit head on a regular
Glastar grinder. A rule of thumb is that almost all of the chipping
should be covered by 3/16" (4.763 mm) foil when applied to 1/8" (3.175
mm) glass.
If the amount of chipping you get with a 180 grit disc
is too great, then you may want to use a finer diamond such as 360
grit.
Do not grind any metal on this disc. It can make
the surface unusable for glass in a matter of seconds.
CHANGING
DISCS
To change disc, first
remove the water supply basin by pulling straight up. The splash
guard is removed in the same way.
Hold the disc with one hand and loosen the aluminum screw
with the other. Once the screw and washer are removed, the disc can
be lifted off the hub.
