Carbide & Ceramic Nozzles

Why Nozzles Wear Out

A Sandblasting Nozzle constricts the high pressure stream of abrasive at the end of the hose and directs it at the project. The abrasive rushing through the nozzle enlarges the hole, and eventually, it must be replaced. The length of time a nozzle can be used depends on the following:

  • The Compressor Size: As the hole enlarges, the system requires more air. Eventually the orifice is so large that the compressor runs constantly and is unable to maintain the proper pressure. At this point, the nozzle must be replaced. As an example, if a 3/32 ceramic nozzle is used with a 2 HP compressor, the orifice enlarges to the point where it must be replaced in one hour. A 5 HP compressor will provide enough additional air so that the same nozzle can be used about 2.5 hours. (see air requirement chart)
  • The Abrasive Used: The harder and sharper the abrasive, the faster the nozzle wears out, and of course, the quicker the job gets done. Therefore, there isn't much that can be done about this
  • The Initial Size of the Nozzle Orifice: Using a nozzle with a smaller orifice saves money. The smaller the hole in the nozzle the longer it will take to enlarge to the point where it must be replaced. Therefore, using a 1/16" nozzle is a better choice than a 3/32".
  • What the Nozzle is Made Of: Glastar offers nozzles made of two different materials: tungsten carbide and ceramic. Carbide lasts much longer than ceramic

Features

Advantages of Carbide Nozzles

  • Carbide nozzles last 10 times longer than ceramic nozzles
  • Saves time when blasting: not having to stop and replace nozzles
  • Carbide nozzles are great for the 'non-stop' blasting artist

Advantages of Ceramic Nozzles

  • Ceramic nozzles are very inexpensive compared to carbide nozzles
  • Because they are less expensive, it is eaiser to own a wider variety of sizes
  • Ceramic nozzles are perfect for the infrequent blasting artist

Match The Nozzle To The Compressor

If a large area is to be blasted it would seem that a nozzle with an orifice as large as possible should be used. However, a large nozzle may require more air than your compressor can supply. The name plate on the air compressor will specify the continuous CFM (cubic feet per minute) it can produce. Then refer to the chart below.

Air Required For Continuous Use With New Nozzle
Nozzle Size CFM at 40 PSI CFM at 60 PSI CFM at 80 PSI Compressor size at 80 PSI
1/16" 2 3 4 2HP
3/32" 5 7 9 3-5HP
1/8" 9 13 17 5HP
